


We were approached by a client who wanted to monitor two ageing bridges to see if they had to undergo maintenance, and wanted to receive data to explore ways of extending their longevity. After evaluating the bridges with the client, we decided to install a total of 12 rosette gauges, with 6 gauges on each bridge, to gather the most accurate data.
In addition to the installation, we provided strain gauge training for future projects. The strain gauges were connected to a data acquisition system, which was installed at the top of the bridge, 8 meters above ground. This setup was chosen to minimise external noise and drift that can occur with the long lengths of lead wire, as these can negatively affect the results from the strain gauges.
Before installation, the concrete surface was pre-coated to create a flat surface that allows for better bonding of the strain gauges and prevents water or moisture ingress at the back of the gauge. The gauges were then bonded using adhesive, and lead wires were soldered to terminals. Each gauge installation was coated with tape to weatherproof it for extended outdoor use.
