Measuring the seat and strap pressure distribution of an athlete within a kayak

We had the pleasure of working with the National Composite Centre on a research project aimed at investigating the pressure distribution and forces applied to the composite seat and strap structure of the kayak during Paralympic athlete Emma Wiggs’ kayaking strokes.

To achieve results, we used the advanced iScan system in conjunction with a highly sensitive CONFORMat™ pressure mapping sensor. This technology allowed us to create a detailed profile of where peak pressures are exerted on the kayak’s components during Emma’s dynamic movements. Each kayak stroke provided critical data visualisations that mapped the shifts and variations in pressure throughout the seat and strapping system. Testing included a variety of setups, including swapping the seat for one without foam inserts and changing the position of the mat to include the strap and legs/knees. With proper calibration within the sensor’s scope and resolution, we were able to measure the forces applied as well.

After completing the test, the results allowed the National Composite Centre to analyse the pressure distribution across the kayak. This analysis helped identify areas that require additional strength and those where mass can be reduced. This data is crucial to ensure compliance with the International Olympic Committee’s rules and regulations, ensuring that the kayak meets all necessary standards.
