Wireless Torque and Force Measurement System for Rotary Drilling Applications


One of our clients reached out to our team, and we were tasked with understanding the mechanical load experienced during drilling operations. This is important for product development, testing, and process optimisation. Torque and axial force directly influence drilling performance, tool wear, energy consumption, and material removal efficiency.

Traditional measurement methods often require slip rings or wired instrumentation, which can introduce complexity and limit practical use on rotating equipment. However, advancements in wireless telemetry now allow for reliable measurement directly from rotating components without disrupting machine operation.

The objective of this project was to design and manufacture a custom measurement system capable of accurately measuring torque and force during drilling while transmitting the data wirelessly for real-time monitoring.

Here at QUAD I, we designed the housing for the electronics, along with strain gauge placement and integration through to installation testing and calibration. The services offered included working with calibration houses to ensure that accurate and repeatable results were achieved from the new instrument that was created.
